2020 Sewing in Review: Christmas

I had such extensive plans for sewing gifts this past year that made a cutting plan for each type of fabric I would be using for all of the projects (canvas, felt, flannel, and interfacing). The red marks are me testing the tailor's chalk since that's what I'd be using to mark all of the fabrics.

The patterns I used were all from the Seamwork Gift Guide, since I've had a pattern subscription with them for about 2 years and wanted to get more use out of the subscription.

The patterns I used the Rocco Lunch Bag and Lee Multi-bag. I also downloaded and cut fabric for the James Glasses Case, but ran out of time to sew them for Christmas gifts. I may use them for gifts later this year or repurpose the flannel for other handsewn projects, since my machine HATES sewing flannel and I haven't figured out the issue yet. The flannel I was going to use as lining was eliminated from all projects.

I also made Card Kitties following Carolyn from SewCanShe's tutorial and a cross-back apron following  Amy from The Hearty Home's tutorial. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of these projects because I was in a race against time and not thinking about blogging later lol.

All the pieces for each project cut and labeled. I used a navy, teal, and tan floral canvas for the outer part of each project.

I also made 3 journal covers using my own process from journal cover making earlier in the year, though I tried a few new techniques. For the journals I made earlier in the year, I made closures out of self-fabric straps. This time I tried using buttons; making a thread loop closure for 1 journal and straps with buttonholes for 2 others.

I greatly prefer the thread loop + button closures. They looked cleaner and neater and I ended up using the same type of closure on the Lee Multibag I made for my nephew. I made the thread loops by braiding embroidery thread then used a large eye upholstery needle to pull it through the edge of journal cover.

I also finished the wedding quilt on New Year's Day 2021! I have been working on completing this gold, navy, and maroon improv quilt all year and it is finally finished! It's not everything that I wanted it to be, but the enemy of done is perfect, and I needed this project DONE.

I added a canvas patch with the couples name and my initials.

I finished the gray twill binding  (which was one with the backing) by hand, so that every piece of it would be handsewn.

I learned so much about quilt design, planning (this last stretch of sewing took approximately 18 hours!!!),  and my personal favorite stitches and design elements from this project. If I can finish the next 2 wedding quilts and the personal quilt projects I have planned by the end of this year, I think I will pursue quilting for art and profit in 2022.

Altogether, I made 1 apron, 3 journals, 2 Rocco bags, 2 Lee bags, and 2 Card Kitties and finished 1 quilt. So much sewing goodness 😊
